Don Caballero was an instrumental rock band formed in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1991, recognized as a pioneering force in "math rock," a term the members reportedly disliked. The band's sound was characterized by complex guitar interplay and "lead drumming," featuring intricate rhythms. Notably, their guitarist employed a finger-tapping technique for rhythm playing, and their music was structured rather than improvised. The founding members included Damon Che, a bassist, and a guitarist, with Ian Williams joining as a second guitarist a year later. They signed to Touch and Go Records in 1993, releasing their first LP, "For Respect," and continued with the label for three more full-length albums, several singles, and one compilation. After the release of "For Respect," bassist Pat Morris left the band, leading to several bassists rotating in and out. One of these bassists appeared on their second LP, "Don Caballero 2." Morris returned for the 1998 album "What Burns Never Returns" but left permanently afterward, being replaced by a member of Williams' side project. Mike Banfield also departed after some touring, and by the time of 2000's "American Don," the band had reduced to a trio. This album was their last for Touch and Go.
