Don Gardner, born on May 9, 1931, in Philadelphia, PA, was a renowned singer and songwriter whose career spanned eight decades, beginning in 1947. He is best known for his hit song "All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth" and "Need Your Lovin," which reached number four on the R&B charts in 1962. This track was later covered by notable artists such as Otis Redding, Tom Jones, and Jackie Wilson. After releasing his third album, Gardner formed his own group, initially known as The Three Bachelors, which he later renamed The Sonotones. He also collaborated with Dee Dee Ford to create a memorable duo and enjoyed success both in the United States and abroad, touring with various artists. In the 1970s, he continued his music career as a solo artist and partnered with Baby Washington. Gardner remained active in the music industry as an artist and repertoire (A&R) manager into the 1980s. Jazz was Gardner's first love, leading him to become a member of the Board of the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts (PCC). He eventually served as Board president and joined the management of a newly built arts center in Philadelphia in 1995. The PCC was a significant passion for Gardner, as its mission was to preserve the legacy of jazz and support young musicians in developing their skills.
