Don Pullen was an American avant-garde jazz pianist and organist, born on December 25, 1941, in Roanoke, Virginia. He passed away on April 22, 1995, due to lymphoma at the age of 53 in East Orange, New Jersey. Pullen was recognized for his percussive approach to the piano, often using his elbows and the backs of his hands in his playing. Throughout his career, he collaborated with notable musicians such as Albert Ayler and was part of a group with Charles Mingus and George Adams in the late 1970s. In addition to performing, Pullen worked as an arranger for record companies and accompanied various singers, including Arthur Prysock, Irene Reid, Ruth Brown, Jimmy Rushing, and Nina Simone.
