Dorothy Ashby was an American jazz harpist born on August 6, 1932, in Detroit, Michigan. She passed away on April 13, 1986, in Santa Monica, California. Ashby was taught to play the harp by Velma Froude at Cass Technical High School in Detroit. Notably, Froude would later teach Alice McLeod, who is better known as Alice Coltrane. Throughout her career, Ashby worked with various artists and established two music publishing houses.
