Double Dee and Steinski were a duo of hip-hop producers, consisting of Doug "Double Dee" DiFranco and Steven "Steinski" Stein. They gained recognition in the early 1980s for their innovative underground hip-hop sample-based collages known as the "Lessons." Although they never achieved a hit record, their work significantly influenced later artists. In 1983, they entered a promotional contest held by a record label to remix a single. DiFranco worked in a professional music studio, while Stein was a copy supervisor at Doyle Dane Bernbach. Despite being older than most in the hip-hop community, they were passionate about the genre, with Stein having extensive knowledge of hip-hop's history. Their entry, "Lesson 1 – The Payoff Mix," featured a rich array of samples from various records, including early hip-hop, funk, disco, and snippets from older songs, as well as vocal samples from diverse sources. The mix was created in a short span of 12 to 14 hours and received critical acclaim, winning first prize from a jury that included notable figures. They followed up with "Lesson 2 - The James Brown Mix" in 1984, which incorporated a montage of classic James Brown samples and other snippets. That same year, DiFranco collaborated with a CBS Records producer to release "Taste So Good," which featured snippets of recorded sex-phone calls.
