Doug Hammond is a talented drummer, percussionist, and vocalist born on December 26, 1942, in Tampa, Florida, USA. He began his musical career in Florida, performing as a sideman in blues and R&B bands before exploring a wide range of genres, including blues, bop, and free jazz. In 1967, he co-founded the Detroit Creative Musicians Association, where he served as vice president and coordinator, contributing to the ideals that eventually led to the founding of Tribe. Hammond relocated to New York in 1970, participating in various jazz projects as both a frontman and group member. His music has progressively evolved to incorporate blues and rhythm chant forms, influenced by American and European avant-garde styles. In addition to his musical endeavors, Hammond is also an accomplished writer, having authored several books of poetry, song lyrics, essays, and drum instructions.
