Daweh Congo, born on March 28, 1969, in Kingston's Jubilee Hospital, is a roots reggae singer and the son of a singer. He grew up in Allman Town and began singing at the age of eight while visiting his father's native Trelawny, where they performed together during school holidays. Although he initially aspired to be a painter, he pursued music out of necessity. Daweh recorded his debut track, "Bread Winner," for Alton Ellis in 1990, which remains unreleased. He later recorded songs for African Star, Andrew Nash, and Kariang before being introduced to producer Barry O'Hare. In 1995, O'Hare released several of Daweh's singles, garnering increasing acclaim. Daweh made his first trip to Europe in 1996, and the following year, O'Hare produced his debut album, which was celebrated for its "live" reggae rhythms and cultural songs, earning it the status of a modern roots classic. Although he released a few singles for TMI and Mikey Jah Son, who produced an excellent track, he became less visible in the music scene afterward, focusing on completing albums for Leggo engineer Bravo and TMI, which released his popular roots single.
