Dr. Alex Paterson, born on October 15, 1959, is a notable figure in the music industry. He worked as a roadie during the 1980s and was influenced by the rise of Chicago house music in England. Paterson joined the A&R department of a record label, which was home to various influential artists, and began recording as the Orb. The duo's first release, "Tripping on Sunshine," appeared on a compilation album in 1988 but did not achieve success. In late 1989, Paterson and Jimmy Cauty were working on an album together, but they split in April 1990 due to Paterson's concerns that the Orb was being perceived as a side-project rather than an original act. Following their split, Cauty released an album credited simply as Space, which stripped Paterson's contributions. Throughout the 1990s, the Orb released several albums, including one that was available for only one day yet managed to reach the Top 50.
