**Bio: Dr Calculus** Dr Calculus was a recording project established in 1984 by Stephen Duffy and Roger Freeman. The duo, both former members of Pigbag, was introduced by Chris Hamlin in a Birmingham bar in Spring 1982. Freeman and Hamlin spent several months in Turin, Italy, where Freeman developed horn sections that would later feature in Dr Calculus recordings. After moving to London at the end of 1983, Freeman was introduced to the emerging Ecstasy culture. In 1984, Duffy and Freeman reunited at the White Trash nightclub in London and decided to record together. They utilized spare studio time from Duffy's solo work to produce their first single, "Programme 7." This led to a second single, "Perfume from Spain," and the album "Designer Beatnik," released in the summer of 1986. The album showcased early chill-out and house tracks that seamlessly blended to create a 40-minute continuous experience. Notable contributions to the album came from Pigbag members Ollie Moore and Chris Lee, bassist Guy Pratt, and vocalists Francoise Gigandet, Tricia Ronane, Jeni Innocent, Caroline Dodd, and Junior Gee, with ambient sounds recorded by Tamsin Anne de Roemer in Japan. The project was co-produced and engineered by Paul Staveley O'Duffy, with artwork by Stephen Duffy's brother Nick, featuring a photo of the Spirit of Ecstasy car mascot
