Dr. Footswitch, born Teddy Khuluzwa in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), was a notable guitarist, vocalist, and bandleader during the early years of the Zamrock era. He later moved to Zambia, where he became an integral part of the rock movement, performing with several Lusaka-based groups in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including The Rave Five, where he was the frontman, as well as Aqualung and the Lusaka Beatles (formerly known as Earth Quake). In his solo career, Khuluzwa wrote, arranged, and recorded his own music, releasing two albums in Zambia that showcased a blend of raw garage-rock elements, psychedelic guitar work, and socially oriented lyrics. He was sometimes referred to as “Teddy Jagger,” a nickname that highlighted his dynamic stage presence. Believed to have relocated to South Africa in the mid-1980s, Khuluzwa reportedly passed away there. His music experienced a resurgence in interest during the 2010s, leading to the rediscovery of his discography and its inclusion in archival compilation series focused on Zamrock.
