Dr. Octagon is a persona created by American rapper Keith Matthew Thornton, known as Kool Keith. The character first appeared on Thornton's 1996 debut solo album, Dr. Octagonecologyst, and is depicted as an extraterrestrial time-traveling gynecologist and surgeon from the planet Jupiter. Thornton released two albums under this alias. The character was killed by Dr. Dooom on the 1999 album First Come, First Served, and was briefly revived before being killed again on the 2008 album Dr. Dooom 2, following the release of The Return of Dr. Octagon, an album produced largely without Thornton's involvement. Thornton and producer KutMasta Kurt recorded two songs under the Dr. Octagon name, "Dr. Octagon" and "Technical Difficulties," which were sent to radio stations and DJs, leading to the production of Dr. Octagonecologyst. The album was recorded in Dan "The Automator" Nakamura's studio in his parents' San Francisco home, featuring turntablist DJ Qbert and additional production by KutMasta Kurt. An instrumental version of the album was released as Instrumentalyst (Octagon Beats). KutMasta Kurt later pursued legal action against Automator due to a dispute over the project's initiation.
