Dr. Lonnie Smith (1942–2021) was a master of the Hammond B-3 organ and a defining voice in soul-jazz. Emerging from Buffalo, New York, in the 1960s, he gained early acclaim with George Benson before leading his own groups and recording prolifically for Blue Note Records. Known for his groove-driven improvisations, spiritual energy, and distinctive turbaned presence, Smith blended jazz, funk, blues, and R&B with effortless flair. His innovative style influenced generations of musicians and solidified his legacy as one of jazz’s most expressive and enduring organists.
