Drexciya is a Detroit electro-techno outfit that was conceived in 1989 and first gained public attention in 1994 with their release "Aquatic Invasion," the first in a thematic series. The group, consisting of James Stinson and Gerald Donald, maintained a mysterious presence, communicating a complex mythology about a "Drexciyan" race of underwater dwellers descended from pregnant slave women thrown overboard during trans-Atlantic deportation. Their music, which they claimed was recorded "live in the studio" rather than programmed, was envisioned as a "dimensional jumphole" linking their African roots to contemporary America. Tragically, Stinson passed away suddenly on September 3, 2002, due to a heart condition, while Donald continues to produce music under various aliases.
