Durand Jones & The Indications is an American contemporary R&B and soul group hailing from Bloomington, Indiana. Founded in 2012 by the core songwriting trio of singer Durand Jones, singer/drummer Aaron Frazer, and guitarist Blake Rhein, the group is known for its dynamic sound reminiscent of legends like Jackie Wilson, Curtis Mayfield, and the Impressions. Their sophomore LP, "American Love Call," showcases a blend of early '70s soul aesthetics with a modern urgency. The band's self-titled debut album, released in 2016, was created with a modest budget of $452.11, which included a case of beer, and emerged from friendships formed during their time at Indiana University. "American Love Call" represents a more ambitious project, featuring strings, backing vocals, and a newfound confidence in their songwriting. Guitarist Blake Rhein notes that their approach to songwriting draws inspiration from a variety of genres, similar to how hip-hop producers work, pulling from '70s folk-rock and classic R&B as well as contemporary influences. Durand Jones reflects on their journey, humorously admitting that he never expected to pursue music after college, but feels a strong calling to continue making and performing music.
