Durand Jones & The Indications is an American contemporary R&B and soul group from Bloomington, Indiana, founded in 2012 by the core songwriting trio of singer Durand Jones, singer/drummer Aaron Frazer, and guitarist Blake Rhein. The group features the dynamic vocal interplay of Durand Jones and Aaron Frazer, drawing inspiration from legends like Jackie Wilson, Curtis Mayfield, and the Impressions. Their sophomore album, American Love Call, showcases a blend of early '70s soul aesthetics with a modern urgency. The band's journey began with their self-titled debut album in 2016, which was recorded for just $452.11, including a case of beer, by friends who met at Indiana University. American Love Call represents the realization of their artistic vision, enhanced with strings, backing vocals, and a newfound confidence in their songwriting. Guitarist Blake Rhein notes that their approach to songwriting is similar to that of hip-hop producers, pulling inspiration from a wide range of genres, including '70s folk-rock and classic R&B. Reflecting on their unexpected success, Jones expressed, “Did I expect to do this shit once I got out of college? Hell no. Totally not. But this is what God is telling me to do – move and groove. So I’m gonna stay in my lane.”
