E. Rodney Jones, known as "The Mad Lad," was a prominent R&B DJ born on August 8, 1928, in Texarkana, TX. He passed away on January 2, 2004, in Baton Rouge, LA, at the age of 76. Jones was recognized as one of the most prolifically recorded DJs in the R&B genre, hosting afternoon shows at Chicago’s R&B powerhouse WVON with a distinctive cool demeanor. His smooth voice was featured on several funky 45s for labels such as Tuff, Twinight, Westbound, and Brunswick. Notably, he recorded the Northern Soul classic “R&B Time” and contributed to the track “The Whole Thing,” which was the flip side of Willie Henderson’s “Loose Booty” on Brunswick. In this track, Jones creatively blended half-singing and rapping to depict a soul food party, cleverly incorporating the Alka-Seltzer jingle “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing” to craft a fun and funky record.
