Eagles of Death Metal is an American rock band formed in 1998 in Palm Desert, California, by Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme. The band's name originated as a joke during a night in the '90s when Hughes and Homme were in a VW van, playfully teasing their friend Cole Loo about the legitimacy of death metal. This led them to ponder what a "peaceful, easy feeling" within the genre would sound like. The band's first appearance was on Vol. 4 of Homme's Desert Sessions recordings, featuring Loo (credited as "Loo Balls") providing death-metal vocals. In this incarnation, Hughes took on the name Jesse "The Devil" Hughes, while Homme used the name "Josh Homme" or another variation. Tim Vanhamel was known as Timmy Tipover VanHamel. Tragically, the band's concert in Paris on November 13, 2015, was targeted in a series of terrorist attacks, resulting in the deaths of at least 89 people. Fortunately, the band members escaped the attack, as did another band scheduled to perform at the same venue shortly after.
