Earl Brown was an American singer, songwriter, vocal arranger, and musical director, born on December 25, 1928, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He passed away on January 10, 2008, in Sherman Oaks, California. Brown is best known for writing the song "If I Can Dream," which was specially composed for the closing of Elvis Presley's "Comeback Special for NBC." He sang with The Skylarks and led The Earl Brown Singers. As the Musical Director of the 1968 "Elvis" TV Special, he created "If I Can Dream" on short notice to honor Martin Luther King, and it became Elvis' first million-selling single in over three years. Throughout his career, Brown received accolades for composing special musical material for popular shows such as the "Dinah Shore Chevy Show" (1956-63), "The Sonny and Cher Show," and "Donny and Marie." He also contributed as a writer and frequently arranged vocals for Rosemary Clooney in the 1990s.
