Earl Young is a Philadelphia-born drummer, songwriter, and producer, recognized as one of the leading figures in the Philly Soul Sound during the 1970s. He is widely acknowledged as the inventor of the four on the floor rhythm pattern, which greatly influenced the development of disco and house music genres. Young utilized the foot pedal as the primary driving force at a constant 120 BPM, tightly supported by the hi-hat and basic drum beat. His work can be heard on the 1973 single "The Love I Lost" by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. Earl Young was born on June 2, 1940, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
