She was an accomplished actress, singer, and cabaret star, known for her diverse heritage, with a mother of African American and Cherokee descent and a White-American father. Kitt was highly active in the entertainment scene during the 1950s and 1960s and was also involved in various social and political movements. Her outspoken nature led to her being blacklisted by President Johnson, which resulted in her working primarily in Europe and Asia.
