Echobelly is a London-based Britpop band that was founded in 1992 when vocalist and guitarist Sonya Madan met guitarist Glenn Johansson in a pub. Madan expressed an interest in singing in a band, leading to the recruitment of bassist and drummer. In 1994, they were joined by a guitarist who was formerly of another band. The band's name reflects the notion of "being hungry for something." After releasing their debut album, Echobelly secured a contract with a label that was part of Epic at the time, leading to the release of their first album in June 1994. The band gained major airplay and became a mainstay of the Britpop genre. Their sophomore record received rave reviews and sold twice as many copies as their debut, with all singles entering the top 30. However, after a major illness, Madan decided to leave the band in 1996, and Debbie Smith also departed due to creative differences. Sonya returned in 1997 for the band's third album, but the singles from this album failed to hit the top 30, leading to a four-year hiatus. They returned with the 2001 'EP' and released their fourth album through their own label, featuring new bassist Ruth Owen. In 2004, they released their fifth album, after which both Owen and drummer left the band, resulting in a breakup.
