Ed Townsend was born on April 16, 1929, in Fayetteville, Tennessee, and passed away on August 13, 2003, in San Bernardino, California. He graduated from Arkansas State College and briefly taught before serving two years in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. In the mid-1950s, he toured the Far East with bandleader Horace Heidt and later moved to Los Angeles. Townsend was a singer and songwriter best known for his 1958 hit "For Your Love," along with a series of other hits he wrote. He co-wrote and co-produced the 1973 hit "Let's Get It On" and collaborated with Marvin Gaye again on the 1978 album "Here, My Dear." Throughout his life, Townsend faced a battle with alcoholism, leading him to establish EBT New Life Inc. and the associated 12 Step Records in 2001 to help others in recovery from addiction. His son, David Townsend, was a member of a soul trio, and he was also known by the name "Edward Townley" for copyright credits.
