Eddie Kirkland was an American blues guitarist, harmonicist, singer, and songwriter, born on October 10, 1927, in Headland, Henry County, Alabama, adjacent to Dothan's Houston County. He began his music career in 1948 as a second guitarist for John Lee Hooker in Detroit. In 1962, he became the guitarist and harmonica player for Otis Redding, performing as part of his show and also recording for King Records. Kirkland's life was marked by a rich musical legacy, collaborating with notable artists such as Muddy Waters, Honeyboy Edwards, King Curtis, and Otis Redding. He passed away on February 27, 2011, in Crystal River, Florida, due to a car accident. Throughout his life, Kirkland claimed to have been born in Jamaica and often cited his birth date as August 16, 1928. However, his grave stone indicates August 16, 1923. His marriage to Ida Mae Shoulders in 1949 is documented, revealing that his mother's name was Dixie Rainey. Despite the discrepancies in his personal history, including his birth date and place, official records confirm his birth in Alabama.
