Eddie Lawrence was an American monologist, actor, singer, lyricist, playwright, director, and television personality, best known for his comic character. He was born on March 2, 1919, in Brooklyn, New York, and passed away on March 25, 2014, in Manhattan, New York. Lawrence began performing during the Great Depression in the 1930s and made his way to radio by 1943, gaining popularity through comic impressions. By the early 1950s, he was performing in lesser-known clubs and taking on bit parts in live television shows, as well as participating in Broadway productions. In September 1956, he achieved a notable milestone when his single "The Old Philosopher" reached the Billboard Top 40 chart, a rare accomplishment for a comedy record by a lesser-known performer. This one-hit wonder helped establish him as a minor celebrity and boosted the sales of his earlier LPs, including "The Garden of Eddie Lawrence" and "The Old Philosopher," the latter being the first of his five LPs for Coral Records. From 1960, Lawrence began a six-year association with Paramount's cartoon subsidiary Famous Studios, lending his voice to thirteen animated shorts, starting with "Scouting for Trouble."
