Edwin Birdsong (August 22, 1941 – January 21, 2019) was an American keyboard and organ player known for his experimental funk and disco music during the 1970s and 1980s. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, he began singing in the Los Angeles Community Choir, influenced by his minister father. After serving in Vietnam, he performed for American troops in clubs throughout Germany before relocating to Baltimore, where he played in local clubs. In the late 1960s, Birdsong moved to New York City to study music and composition at the Manhattan School of Music and Juilliard. There, he connected with Wes Farrell, who helped him secure a contract with Polydor. He also reconnected with high school friend Roy Ayers, leading to session work with Herbie Mann and joining Ayers' band. Birdsong contributed to Ayers' albums and worked with RAMP and Eighties Ladies. Although he never achieved chart success with his solo work, he co-wrote Ayers' hit "Running Away." Over time, Birdsong developed a dedicated fan base and became a notable figure, having his work sampled by artists such as Daft Punk, Kanye West, De La Soul, Snoop Dogg, and Gang Starr.
