El Coco is a disco and electronica production and songwriting duo that formed in the late 1960s after meeting at an audition. They initially played in a rock band called Joshua before being hired by a label in 1973 to create extended remixes for dance-club play. Their groundbreaking work is considered seminal in the evolution of electronic rhythm from the 1970s onward. Their distinctive sound, influenced by their jazz training, is evident in their arrangements, chord progressions, and overall musicality. El Coco created a series of alias projects and became a dominant force on dancefloors, serving as an American counterpart to the European electronic disco sound.
