El-P, born March 4th, 1975, in Brooklyn, New York, is a pioneering figure in hip-hop known for his obstinate and adventurous approach. He blends a mid-'80s lo-fi old school aesthetic with a progressive rock musician's desire to push boundaries, consistently rejecting the mainstream trends of corporate hip-hop in favor of his own uncommercial leanings. In the mid-'90s, he gained recognition as part of a groundbreaking trio, which released the first LP on a label renowned for its focus on intelligent hip-hop. Throughout the group's successful run, El-P showcased his intense lyricism and powerful sonic production. In the latter part of the '90s, he collaborated with various artists and, in 2001, after releasing one final album with Harlem rappers, the group amicably decided to pursue individual paths. Following this, El-P launched his own label and contributed to the first solo album of a former frontman. He also managed to release his own solo album, which came out in May of 2002.
