Élan Vital is a three-piece band from Dunedin, New Zealand, known for their unique blend of 'dark disco,' cold wave, post-punk, and goth-pop. The group consists of Renee Barrance, who has previously been part of the Hairdos and Canyon Spree; Danny Brady, known for his work with Death and the Maiden and Thought Creature; and Nikolai Sim, who has played in Terrified, Koyla, and Scattered Brains of the Lovely Union. Since their formation in 2015, Élan Vital has crafted melodic music that reflects their diverse musical influences. Danny enjoys cheesy house music, U2's 'The Joshua Tree,' and even pitched-down Chipmunks, while Renee, an '80s baby, has a fondness for '80s music videos and Paula Abdul. The band is currently promoting their debut album, 'Shadow Self,' through a six-date tour across New Zealand. They describe the album as "a capsule in time from the early stages of the band's origin," exploring a dystopian future that never came to be and serving as a soundtrack to a film that doesn't exist—an experience that is both formative and personal.
