Elbow is an alternative rock band from Bury, Greater Manchester, England, formed in 1990. Originally called Mr. Soft, and later shortened to Soft, the band consists of guitarist and backup vocalist Mark Potter, bassist Pete Turner, and drummer Richard Jupp. Vocalist, guitarist, and lyricist Guy Garvey joined the band after being invited by Mark when they met at college at the age of 16. Mark's brother, keyboardist and backup vocalist Craig Potter, joined soon after. The band changed their name to "elbow" in 1997 after Guy was inspired by a character in the BBC TV drama "The Singing Detective," who described the word "elbow" as the most sensual word in the English language. In 1997, they were signed to a label, but due to a takeover and a shift in focus towards indie bands in 1998, their produced debut album was scrapped. During this time, they released a self-issued E.P. that has since become ultra rare, along with a compilation appearance of one of their songs. In 2000, elbow released their first proper E.P. on a small indie label before signing with Richard Branson's label in 2001. The band won the Mercury Prize in 2008 for Best British Album for their work, "The Seldom Seen Kid." Drummer Richard Jupp left the band in 2016 to pursue drum tutoring.
