Elias Tanenbaum (1924–2008) was an American composer, trumpeter, and music educator, known for his diverse contributions to music. He was the father of a classical guitarist and served as a founding director of the Electronic Computer Music Studio. Tanenbaum was a faculty member at a prominent institution in New York City from 1970 until 2008 and held the position of visiting composer at another institution in 1983, as well as lecturing in 1993. Born in Brooklyn, he began studying trumpet at an early age and played in various jazz bands. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he pursued studies in composition under notable teachers and earned a B.S. degree in 1949, followed by an M.A. degree. As a composer, Tanenbaum created over 100 works across a wide range of genres, including orchestral, chamber, jazz, theater, ballet, and electronic music. His compositions were performed extensively in the USA, Europe, and Japan by numerous prominent ensembles. Tanenbaum received multiple awards and grants throughout his career, including a MacDowell Fellowship, a commission from a notable organization, two grants from another organization in 1974 and 1989, and two unspecified awards.
