Ella Fitzgerald, born on April 25, 1917, in Newport News, Virginia, USA, was known as 'The First Lady Of Song' and became the most popular female jazz singer in the United States for over fifty years. Throughout her illustrious career, she sold more than 40 million albums and won 13 Grammy Awards in various categories, including Best Jazz Performance and Best Vocal Performance. Ella Fitzgerald passed away on June 15, 1996, in Beverly Hills, California, at the age of 79. She was the mother of a jazz pianist/singer and the ex-wife of a jazz double-bassist.
