Ellie Matt, known for his band "Ellie Matt and The G.I.'s Brass," began his musical career in 1971, inspired by Joey Lewis of Trinidad and Tobago. His first official composition was "Play Your Mass All Over Town for Carnival." Introduced to music through steel pan by his brother Joseph (Boy Blue) Esdaille, Ellie was tutored in guitar by the Bertie Brothers and Sammy Watts in St. Kitts, while he learned to play the keyboard and bass guitar independently. As a talented musical arranger, composer, band leader, and calypsonian, Ellie Matt has traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean, North America, Europe, and Japan. He led his band to three successful brass aroma titles and performed in Trinidad carnival for ten consecutive years. His band frequently played in Antigua, St. Maarten, the British and US Virgin Islands, Toronto, New York City, and Aruba, earning numerous trophies for best visiting band in Vancouver, Trinidad, and the USVI. Ellie Matt has provided back-up music for renowned artists such as the Mighty Sparrow, Calypso Rose, Shadow, Arrow, King Short Shirt, Swallow, King Obstinate, David Rudder, Lord Nelson, and the late Lord Kitchener. He served as the music director for a West Indian-based play called "Glory" under the London Arts Council and conducted both brass and steel bands in Stockholm, Sweden.
