Elvin Jones was an American jazz drummer born on September 9, 1927, in Pontiac, Michigan, and he passed away on May 18, 2004, in Englewood, New Jersey. Known as "the world's greatest rhythmic drummer" by "Life" magazine, he had two brothers who were also musicians: one a jazz pianist and the other a trumpet and flugelhorn player. Jones entered the Detroit jazz scene in the late 1940s after touring as a stagehand with the Army Special Services show Operation Happiness. He began his career at the Detroit club Grand River Street and later worked at another club, supporting visiting players. With his rhythmic and innovative style, Jones became one of jazz's highest-profile drummers as a member of a notable quartet.
