Emma Shaw, known by her stage name emzae, grew up inspired by the Girl Power movement and the Y2K pop era, leading her to pursue a career in music. By 17, she was writing regularly, gaining early support from BBC Introducing and attracting thousands of listeners online with her demo projects. As she stepped onto the live music scene, emzae developed a solo set that showcased her production skills and multi-instrumental talent, earning her festival slots and support roles for artists like Altered Images and LoneLady. Emzae prides herself on her independence, often writing, recording, producing, and mixing her music while playing every instrument and singing all vocal layers on her tracks. She creates a unique sound that blurs the lines of pop and explores themes such as change, self-doubt, confusion, empowerment, and social commentary. Her work is also deeply influenced by her experiences with chronic mental and physical illness, which she discusses openly when comfortable. Emzae is dedicated to advocating for a more health-focused and welcoming music industry, encouraging fellow musicians to pursue their dreams despite any limitations they may face.
