Enoch Smoky is a band that originated in Iowa City, Iowa, during the fall of 1967. Formed by Dickie Douglas, an Iowa native, and John Fraga from Detroit, the band was initiated by local businessman Tony Borg, who provided a farmhouse for rehearsal and helped them acquire equipment. The original lineup included Dickie Douglas on guitar and vocals, Greg Roosevelt on rhythm guitar, John Fraga on bass guitar, and Richard Collignon on percussion. By early 1968, Fraga returned to Detroit, prompting Roosevelt to shift from rhythm guitar to bass guitar, taking inspiration from Jack Bruce's style. This transition solidified the power-trio format that would define the band. Enoch Smoky's first public performance took place on the Pentacrest at the University of Iowa, featuring a setlist that included Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" and several original songs. Roosevelt named the band after a Kiowa Native American chief, Smoky, who was known for his contributions to the Kiowa culture. The band gained popularity, becoming the first to perform at Gabe and Walker's, a notable bar in Iowa City, and played various venues across Iowa, including the famous Wadena Concert. Dickie's son, Eric, joined the band as a drummer in 1990.
