Erik Satie was a French composer and pianist born on May 17, 1866, in Honfleur, France. He passed away on July 1, 1925, in Arcueil, France. A colorful figure in the early 20th-century Parisian avant-garde, Satie referred to himself as a "phonometrograph" or "phonometrician," preferring this designation over "musician" after being described as "a clumsy but subtle technician" in a 1911 book on contemporary French composers. From the 1940s onward, his work was increasingly recognized as a precursor to artistic movements such as minimalism, repetitive music, ambient music (which he termed "Furniture Music"), and the Theatre of the Absurd. In addition to his music, Satie left behind a remarkable collection of often humorous and witty writings.
