Erkki Kurenniemi (10 July 1941 – 1 May 2017) was a Finnish designer, composer, philosopher, and artist, known for being a pioneer of electronic art in Finland. Born in Hämeenlinna, he had a background as a nuclear scientist and composed computer-based music while designing his own instruments, founding his work in 1962. Kurenniemi was also a pioneer of industrial automation at Rosenlew in the 1970s and worked as an automation designer in Nokia's cable division in the early 1980s. From 1987 until 1999, he served as the head of exhibition planning at the Heureka Science Centre. Throughout his career, Kurenniemi focused on exploring new types of user interfaces for musical instruments and the semi-automatic generation of music.
