ESG, an art-funk ensemble from the South Bronx, was formed by sisters Renee, Valerie, and Marie Scroggins, along with friends David Miles (guitar) and Leroy Glover (bass). The group's music showcases the sisters' complex polyrhythms, complemented by bass and pop-flavored guitar. ESG signed with 99 Records and released their debut self-titled EP in 1981, featuring three live and three studio tracks produced by the legendary Martin Hannett. They followed this with the 1982 EP "ESG Says Dance to the Beat of Moody" and their first full-length album, "Come Away With ESG," in 1983. After disbanding shortly thereafter, ESG re-formed in the early '90s, marking their return with a self-titled compilation in 1991 of previously released material. Their work gained popularity among hip-hop artists seeking samples, with notable acts such as TLC, the Wu-Tang Clan, the Beastie Boys, and Big Daddy Kane utilizing ESG beats. The group addressed this phenomenon on the 1992 EP "Sample Credits Don't Pay Our Bills." In 1995, they released "ESG Live!" featuring a mix of old and new material, and continued to record throughout the late '90s, even incorporating Scroggins' daughters, Chistelle and Nicole, into the ensemble.
