Essatu Tessema was an Ethiopian singer born in the Sidama region in 1931. He began his career at a young age, performing at weddings and festivals while working as a shoe shiner on the streets of Addis Ababa. In 1946, Tessema was hired as a vocalist in the Imperial Body Guard band, making him one of the youngest professional musicians in the country at that time. With the advent of radio in the late 1940s, he became one of the first artists to be played on air and quickly became an early hitmaker. Throughout his career, he released several records, primarily under the Philips label, until his passing in the mid-1990s.
