Essra Mohawk was an American singer/songwriter whose career spanned over five decades. Born on April 23, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she began her journey in the music industry at a young age with a single released as Jamie Carter in 1965. After meeting Shadow Morton, she pitched songs she wrote to the Shangri-Las and Vanilla Fudge. In 1967, she met Frank Zappa in New York, which led to her joining the Mothers Of Invention and the release of her first LP, "Sandy's Album Is Here At Last," on Bizarre in 1968. In 1969, while singing in a New York club, she was discovered by Mo Ostin, who signed her to Reprise Records. That same year, she recorded her debut album as Essra Mohawk, which was released in May 1970 and received significant praise. Throughout the 1970s and beyond, Mohawk continued to contribute to the music world both as a performer and songwriter. She sang memorable tunes for Schoolhouse Rock! and collaborated with various artists, including a stint with the Jerry Garcia Band, as well as working with Cyndi Lauper and Tina Turner. Essra Mohawk passed away on December 11, 2023, in Nashville, Tennessee.
