Ester Phillips was an influential American Soul and Rhythm & Blues singer, born on December 23, 1935, in Galveston, Texas. She began her career after winning an amateur talent contest in 1949 at the Barrelhouse Club. Initially performing under the name 'Little Esther,' she was a member of the California Rhythm and Blues Caravan. Her first hit record, "Double Crossing Blues," reached #1 on the R&B charts in 1950. However, her career faced challenges in the mid-1950s due to a struggle with drug addiction. After recovering, she made a successful comeback in 1962, now performing as Esther Phillips. She passed away on August 7, 1984, at UCLA Medical Center in Carson, California, at the age of 48 from liver and kidney failure.
