Esther Phillips was an influential American Soul and Rhythm & Blues singer, born on December 23, 1935, in Galveston, Texas. Her career began in 1949 when she won an amateur talent contest at the Barrelhouse Club. Initially performing as 'Little Esther,' she was part of the California Rhythm and Blues Caravan. Her first hit record, "Double Crossing Blues," reached #1 on the R&B charts in 1950. However, her career faced challenges in the mid-1950s due to a battle with drug addiction. After recovering, she made a successful comeback in 1962, now performing under her full name, Esther Phillips. Tragically, she passed away on August 7, 1984, at the age of 48 from liver and kidney failure at UCLA Medical Center in Carson, California.
