His father was killed at Auschwitz during World War II, and he was home-schooled by his mother and relatives. Évariste completed his preparational studies in Lyon from 1960 to 1963, where he wrote his first lyrics at the age of 16. He obtained his doctorate in theoretical physics at the University of Lyon and later served as an assistant professor in physics at Princeton University from 1966 to 1967. After returning to France, he adopted the pseudonym Evariste, inspired by the French mathematician Évariste Galois. Between 1968 and 1970, he produced three self-produced singles and an EP, featuring covers by a renowned Tunisian-French cartoonist who was tragically murdered in 2015. Evariste's last record was released in 1975. Joël Sternheimer, known as Évariste, married Yuki Yamaguchi Sternheimer on September 6, 1979.
