Everal Cooper, known as King Culture, was born in Kingston, Jamaica. After the death of his father and his mother's migration to Canada, he learned to fend for himself. His musical journey began in 1969 as the owner and part-time operator of the Sound System Emperor Lion. He also worked at a pressing plant in Kingston before moving to Toronto, Canada, in 1976, where his experience at the pressing plant inspired him to launch King Culture Records. In 1979, King Culture established King Culture Records and Videos, a retail record and video outlet on Eglinton Avenue, which quickly became successful. By 1981, he opened a second outlet to meet growing demand, but due to an economic recession, he had to scale back to one store, which also housed his studio. As a producer, King Culture released records by Jamaican artists such as Rod Taylor, Barry Brown, and Pad Anthony, while focusing on Canadian artists like Howie Smart, Stamma Rank, and The Uplifters. He often paired Jamaican artists with Canadian artists on 7" singles released under his label. In 1982, he received an award for the dub album "King Culture In A Cultural Mood" at the 3rd Canadian Black Music Awards and was recognized as Reggae Producer of the Year and Top Reggae Distributor. Over the years, he has won numerous awards for his productions, music and video distribution, and his support of Canadian reggae.
