Evie Sands, born on July 18, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York, is a singer known for her remarkable yet challenging journey in pop music. Her soulful, husky voice first caught the attention of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's Blue Cat label in 1965. After signing with the label, Sands recorded her debut single, "Take Me for a Little While," with the songwriting and production team of Chip Taylor and Al Gorgoni. However, just as her version was gaining traction on the R&B charts, a test pressing was leaked to Chess Records, leading Chicago soul singer Jackie Ross to release her own version. The marketing power of Chess ensured that Ross' cover received the majority of radio airplay, sidelining Sands' original and resulting in a legal battle that hindered her early career. Sands' follow-up single, "I Can't Let Go," released in 1966, was also overshadowed when it became a major international hit for the Hollies a year later. After moving to the Cameo label, she released "Angel of the Morning" in 1967, which initially received heavy airplay but was ultimately eclipsed by Merilee Rush's version after Cameo went bankrupt shortly after the release.
