Faust is a pioneering German band known for their innovative use of the recording studio as an instrument and their significant role in the Krautrock genre. Formed in the early 1970s, they released their first two albums under Polydor before being dropped due to commercial struggles. They then signed with Virgin Records, resulting in the release of "The Faust Tapes," which featured edited older material and was marketed as a single, leading to over 50,000 copies sold. Their subsequent album, "Faust IV," was recorded at the Manor studio while Mike Oldfield worked on "Tubular Bells." Despite a two-year continuation after "IV," the band seemingly vanished without new releases. In the 1980s, their initial records and unreleased archival material were released by Chris Cutler's ReR and Recommended labels, marking the start of a creative partnership that would later involve Jean-Hervé Peron. Faust reactivated in 1994, performing live across the UK and Europe and releasing the album "Rien" on Table Of The Elements. They toured and recorded extensively, with most later works released on H.J. Irmler's Klangbad label until the band split into distinct lineups in 2004. Their live performances in both the 70s and 90s were notorious for their chaotic energy, often involving unconventional props like pinball machines and blowtorches.
