Faye Adams, born in 1923 in Montclair, New Jersey, was the daughter of gospel singer David Tuell, a prominent figure in the Church of God In Christ. She began singing gospel music at the age of five. In 1942, she married her future manager, Tommy Scruggs, and started her career under her married name. In the early 1950s, while performing in Atlanta, Georgia, she was discovered by a singer who introduced her to a recording artist. By 1952, she had changed her name to Faye Adams and signed with a record label as the lead singer with The. Her first release, "Shake A Hand," written by Morris, became a massive hit, topping the US Billboard R&B chart for ten weeks in 1953 and reaching #22 on the US pop chart. Adams followed up with two more R&B chart-toppers in 1954, "I'll Be True" and "It Hurts Me to My Heart." However, her success began to wane with "Atomic Adams." By 1963, after remarrying and becoming Fannie Jones, she retired from the secular music scene to return to her gospel roots and family life in New Jersey.
