Fela Ransome Kuti, commonly known as Fela Kuti, was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, composer, and political activist. He was born on October 15, 1938, in Abeokuta, Nigeria, and is best known for pioneering the genre of Afrobeat, which combines traditional African music with jazz, funk, and highlife. Fela was also known for his outspoken criticism of the Nigerian government and social issues, using his music as a platform for activism. He formed the band Koola Lobitos in the early 1960s, which later evolved into Africa '70. Fela Kuti's influence extends beyond music, as he is recognized for his significant impact on African culture and politics. He passed away on August 2, 1997.
