Fela Ransome Kuti, commonly known as Fela Kuti, was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, composer, and political activist. He is best known for pioneering the genre of Afrobeat, which combines traditional African music, jazz, funk, and highlife. Fela was born on October 15, 1938, in Abeokuta, Nigeria, and he passed away on August 2, 1997. Throughout his career, he was known for his outspoken criticism of the Nigerian government and his advocacy for social justice, often using his music as a platform for political activism. His band, Koola Lobitos, was one of the early groups that showcased his innovative sound. Fela's influence on music and culture continues to be felt around the world.
