Vicki and Ronni Gossett, known collectively as the Female Species, began their musical journey in 1966 as teenagers in Whittier, California. Founded in Southern California, the group experienced a dynamic evolution, with members coming and going and their base of operations shifting from Las Vegas to Los Angeles and Nashville. Their sound transformed over the years from garage rock to lounge and country-pop, yet they consistently showcased a remarkable talent for hooks and harmony. Throughout their career, the Female Species crossed paths with notable acts such as The Carpenters, Paul Revere & The Raiders, and The Judds, while remaining dedicated to their craft and resisting any unwanted advances. In the 1980s, they transitioned into staff songwriting roles for music publishing companies, contributing to the hit-making scene. Their relentless pursuit of success culminated in a rare audition for RCA’s top executives, a significant opportunity that typically eludes artists over the age of 30, as they were in their 40s at the time.
